Module description
This module investigates whether psychology is a science. It does this through introducing the scientific method and the Cycle of Enquiry, and then uses material from various areas of psychology to evaluate it. The course will end with a more detailed look at the psychology of individual differences, and the various methodologies that are used to develop nomothetic theories of personality and intelligence.

Intended learning outcomes
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the most important areas in contemporary psychology
- demonstrate an understanding of the history of psychology, the ways in which the methods of psychology have changed over time, and why
- explain why different methods can be used in the social sciences generally, and in psychology in particular
- demonstrate understanding the meaning of “the scientific method”
- explain and discuss important psychological topics using the appropriate vocabulary and expressions
