SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

The module is aimed at students who already have a good general proficiency in English (High CEFR B2 moving to CEFR C1). It aims to support students to develop a thorough understanding of Good Academic Practice (GAP) and how to apply this knowledge to their own work, develop an understanding of basic processes involved in carrying out group research, communicating effectively in interactive seminar formats, giving academic presentations, and further developing academic listening skills.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge, skills and understanding of research processes to carrying out a simple research project (SCQF 7)

  • Deliver well-structured presentations, expanding and supporting points, at some length, with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples (CEFR C1);
  • Understand the main ideas, points of view, and key details of academic and professional presentations (CEFR C1)
  • Interact spontaneously and effectively, with a degree of fluency in academic contexts. (CEFR C1)
