Module description

Contemporary French-language poetry is extremely lively and varied. This module explores the ways poets negotiate the many heritages – from romanticism to surrealism and the Oulipo - that inform their practices. We look at how poems articulate political and aesthetic concerns both in the context of books in the traditional sense and through multi-medial approaches. The seminars are designed to enable close-reading and poem performance, as well as the discussion of the place of poetry and the role it can play in relation to events and issues our societies face, including the environmental crisis and the politics and discourses responding to phenomena of migration and displacement.
