The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. Module description

Students will continue to acquire Chinese characters (1200 characters and 3,000 words) while studying more complex texts and enhancing their spoken language skills. The cultural content of this module will explore issues in contemporary China and the rest of the Chinese-speaking world from a range of cultural perspectives. Documentary films, works of popular music and viral videos will be studied alongside online poetry, art installations and blog entries in order to better understand some core issues in contemporary Chinese culture from 1989 to the present day.

Intended learning outcomes

  • understand normal speed dialogues and monologues on many academic and everyday life topics as well as current affairs
  • express themselves clearly and at natural speed in short, connected paragraphs with some idiomatic phrases
  • recognise and use 1200 characters or around 3,000 frequently used Chinese words/phrases and read short articles
  • compose short essays on everyday and socio-cultural issues using proper structures and sentence patterns frequently used in Modern Standard Chinese
  • have acquired a broad knowledge and understanding of Chinese literary and visual cultures and their sociopolitical contexts
