Module description

This module will study a selection of Arabic plays and theoretical works on Arabic theatre written in the second half of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first centuries. Students will be required to analyse the artistic aspects of the plays within the contexts of socio-political issues in the contemporary Arab world and beyond it. The module is designed to improve and broaden students’ knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic as well as their skills in cultural analysis.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Explain the impact of socio-political developments on the ways theatre in the Arab world has transformed.
  • Explain the various devices through which theatre comments on socio-political developments.
  • Critique the artistic parameters of theatre texts such as language, literary and theatrical devices, characterisation, the use of various times and spaces.
  • Critique theatre beyond its artistic parameters, as a source for studying history, society, religion, gender, politics as well as studying languages.
