AH5806 Project Work: Digital Mapping

Academic year

2025 to 2026 Semester 1

Key module information

SCOTCAT credits

15

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

SCQF level

SCQF level 11

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Availability restrictions

Module description

This module challenges students to research a museum collections dataset and create a digital map to visualise, explore and analyse that data. Students will be instructed in digital mapping techniques using free, open-source GIS mapping software. Students are required to produce structured spatial data for their dataset based on their research and to visualise those datapoints on an interactive digital map. This module consists of set topics. Each topic will be delivered fully online as video content, set readings, and asynchronous reflective and practical tasks. Live Q&A sessions, feedback on asynchronous activities and one-to-one discussions will guide students throughout the course.

Learning and teaching methods and delivery

Weekly contact

There are no fixed weekly contact hours, but students should expect to engage in asynchronous discussions. There will be opportunities for synchronous one-to-one and group discussions during the module. Students should take note of the overall study hours expected when planning their learning.

Scheduled learning hours

20

The number of compulsory student:staff contact hours over the period of the module.

Guided independent study hours

126

The number of hours that students are expected to invest in independent study over the period of the module.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Clean and visualise datasets using software and digital platforms
  • Create structured, standardised spatial data from unstructured descriptive data
  • Create a basic digital map using GIS mapping tools
  • Understand how spatial information can be used to explore and analyse art collections
  • Reflect critically on process to learn from experience
