Module description
This module explores the role of the senses in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European art and architectural design and experience. It begins in the late sixteenth century with rising scientific and philosophical debates about sensory stimuli sparking human knowledge and behavior and ends in the late eighteenth-century with the sublime and picturesque as aesthetic categories grounded in sensory experience. Topics to be considered include: representations of the senses; scientific tools and illustrations; built environments of surveillance; and mirrors and wonder.
