Module description

This module offers students an opportunity to explore histories of modern and contemporary sculpture from an ecocritical or environmental perspective. All forms of three-dimensional expression from a diverse range of locations will be considered, including everything from state monuments to informal displays of yard art. Each week, we will consider different ways in which sculpture’s properties afford opportunities for considering pressing environmental themes, such as pollution, land use, gentrification, exploitation of finite resources, waste and recycling, or erosion and disintegration. For the final assessment, students will be challenged to pair a historical sculpture with a contemporary three-dimensional artwork to consider how they relate to a common environmental theme.
