Module description

An exploration of the experiences of Africans in Anglophone North America from the beginnings of slavery until the American Civil War. The course focuses on the social, cultural and economic aspects of African slavery and freedom during the era in which America was transformed from a colony into a new nation. In particular, we will focus on the connections between the labour of enslaved people and American capitalism in the nineteenth century, in addition the financial and trade connections slavery's capitalism enabled around world. Attention will also be devoted to the Atlantic slave trade, how societies construct race, and the world of America's slave owners.
