Course information

Referencing can feel like a minefield of rules and formatting - this session breaks it down. You'll learn why referencing matters, how to identify what type of source you're citing, and get to grips with the differences between citation styles. We'll also introduce Cite Them Right Online, a key tool to help you reference with confidence.

Aims and objectives

  • Understand why we attribute credit to the sources we use
  • Appreciate the range of different referencing styles available and what ones are used at St Andrews
  • Gain awareness of the key component parts of a reference, which vary depending on style, but usually include an in-text citation or footnote marker and corresponding reference list. 
  • Know how to use Cite Them Right Online to support accurate referencing
  • Know what a reference management software tool is and where to go for further support in using EndNote
