William Leighton was a merchant burgess in Denmark by 1639. He was the son of Richard Lichton and his first consort Elline Mogensdatter. Leighton married after 18/12/1633 and before 5/2/1637 to Maren, a daughter of Henrik Gertsen, and was dead by 18/2/1643. He traded regularly with the Baltic ports between 1633-43, and exported horses and oxen in 1633, 1637-43. He owned a 'skude' jointly with his father in 6/4/1638, and alone by 21/4/1639. He later had two skuder in 29/4/1640 and 25/3/1643. Among other things, Leighton lent money at interest with real estate as security in 1636 and 1639-41. His wife had a claim of 39 daler 1 mark to Soren Knudsen's estate in 23/2/1646, and he had one himself of 14 daler to Peder Nielson Hanes 14/10/1643.
