Richard Leighton was the mayor of his town by 1633, but was dead by 1649. He married Elline Mogensdatter, and with her had the children Otto, Richard and William. He later married again to Margrete Tillufsdater, the widow of mayor Hans Sorensen. Leighton was assailed by his son Otto, but obtained a royal pardon for him 1642. Leighton exported horses and oxen between 1606-43, and traded regularly with Baltic ports, especially Rostock and Lubeck. He sued John Carnegie, a burgess of Ny Lodose, for a claim of 165 daller in 1621 and claimed 500 daler from Henrik Gertsen's estate to which his wife owed 65 daler 18/2/1633. Leighton lent money at interest with real estate as security in 1633-4, 1639-40. Money belonging to charitable trusts was deposited with Leighton, at interest. He was in charge of the construction of the lock in the harbour in 1633-4and by 1641 owned a house in the market.
