George Wishart, 1599-1671, was the Bishop of Edinburgh. and came from East Lothian. He was a friend and companion of the Marquis of Montrose, and joined the Royalist army as the Marquis' chaplain. He accompanied Montrose on his flight to Bergen, and continued with him to The Hague, where he wrote his memoirs of the campaign. He joined the Scots Brigade in Holland as its chaplain in 1650. From 1650-52 he ministered to the Scots congregation at Schiedam. He appears to have remained in the Netherlands until 1660. That year he returned to the British Isles and served as a lecturer at Newcastle. He was made bishop of Edinburgh in 1662, and remained such until his death in 1671.
