William Stewart was a brother of Sir John First Earl of Traquair, son of John Stewart the younger of Traquair and Margaret, daughter of Andrew, master of Ochiltree. He entered Danish service 15/3/1626 as part of Colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment, and was wounded in action at Oldenburg September 1627. The following year he became an appointed ensign. The Stockholm muster rolls show that Stewart served as a lieutenant, still in Mackay's regiment, in 1629. He transferred to Patrick Ruthven's [SSNE 3413] regiment in the same year. By 1630 he was again a lieutenant in Mackay's and got promoted to captain in Robert Monro's [SSNE 94] recruited squadron in 1631. Stewart became a captain, then major in Mackay's regiment in 1632. He later became a colonel.
