John Innes, laird of Crombie, levied company of foot for service under King Christian IV of Denmark-Noroway. He is probably the same man who served as a captain in Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment of the Swedish army in 1630. He served as lieutenant colonel by 1632

Monro, His Expedition with the worthy Scots regiment called Mackeyes (2 vols., London, 1632), II, List of the Scottish Officers in Chief; Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, 2nd Series II, pp.147-8, III, pp.400 and 491, 11/12/67, 7/1 and 16/3/1630; Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1630/36-38; T. Riis, Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot (Odense, 1988), II, p.113.
It was probably this man who served as lieutenant colonel in the Earl of Dalhousie's Horse in the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant in 1644. See A list of the Several Regiments and Chief Officers of the Scottish Army quartered neer Newcastle (London 1644); Ed. Furgol, A Regimental History of the Covenanting Armies, 1639-1641 (Edinburgh, 1990), 129.
