Text source

Jacob Johan Wilhelm Philip Stuart was born in Germany, presumably to Scottish parents. He entered Danish-Norwegian service in 1688. By 1691 he served as a lieutenant in the Sjaelland infantry regiment and rose to lieutenant captain in Christian Gyldenlove's infantry in 1700. Stuart went as a volunteer in the Danish army on Gyldenlove's Italian campaign in 1701 and was ordered by him to raise a company for service there. In January 1704 he became a captain. Stuart later served at the seige of Stralsund in 1716 after which he was promoted to the rank of major in January 1718. His promotions continued and he was made first liuetenant colonel in August 1725, and then Commendant of Fredriksten from October 1727 until his death. He achieved the rank of colonel in June 1733 and major general in February 1747. He died, unmarried, in 1749. Ovenstad calls Major General Stuart 'Jacob (Johan) Wilhelm Stuart, and says that he was born in Germany. Other sources, like Riis, call him James Philip. Anker Lists him as a Norwegian. In all cases, the dates of service and promotion match exactly, so it is the same man
