Henrik Hay was a Scot in Swedish service. Svenska Adelns Ättartavlor lists him as the son of Colonel Alexander Hay [SSNE 437]. Stockholms Nations Studenter lists him as the son of the merchant William Hay who traded with Danzig. He was born in 1631 (or 1639) in Stockholm. Hay attended Uppsala University in 1652 with his brother William [SSNE 147]. After leaving university Hay was a 'konduktor' of fortification in 1658, and a common soldier in Sodermanland regiment. He was an underofficer there and then entered Holstein's service in 1669 as a private in the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp's guard. Hay returned to Swedish service in 1675. Hay, now a major, became commandant of Cobron's Fort in Livland in 1682 and of Kokenhusen in 1695. The fortress was initially to be replaced with a new one, but Hay was suddenly placed in an inadequate defensive position against the Saxon army, who took possession of the fort in 1700. Hay was accused of surrendering the fort too quickly and was arrested. He died in prison in Riga before he could be charged in October 1700. Hay was ennobled in Sweden in 1689 and introduced to the Riddarhus under nr. 1187.
