Ensign John Bartley served as an ensign in the regiment of Patrick [SSNE 3413] and Francis Ruthven [SSNE 3404]. In July 1637, Eleazer Borthwick wrote to the Marquis of Hamilton noting the return to Britain of General Patrick Ruthven along with Mr Bartley. It is probable that Bartley had worked in the retinue of Ruthven since 1635 when he was last recorded on the muster rolls.
