GSIS student completes Summer Internship at UK Health Security Agency
The Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies were delighted to hear that our Health Data Science MSc student Edward Tamelkoe interned with the Infectious Diseases Modelling Team at the UK Health Security Agency through the HDR UK Black Internship Programme during the summer.
Edward shared how motivating this was noting ".....I focused on improving a mosquito species classification model, increasing its accuracy from 83% to 91%. My team also won the 2025 HDR UK BIP Technical Challenge for our analysis of lung cancer demographics using synthetic data to identify gene expression differences across ethnic groups and genders. This experience, supported by the University of St Andrews and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, enhanced my technical skills and shifted my perspective on the Civil Service, motivating me to explore PhD opportunities in health data science."
