Embracing Sustainable Development Goals: A Visit to Scotland’s International Development Alliance Annual Conference

18 October 2023

Scotland's International Development Alliance annual conference in Edinburgh provided a platform for a remarkable experience that sought to rekindle the passion and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference explored how to inspire people and communities to renew their commitment to the SDGs, both in Scotland and globally. The event was not a passive gathering; it was a dynamic engagement in the discourse surrounding these vital goals. It also offered invaluable insights into the real-world application of the frameworks taught at institutions such as the University of St Andrews.

A diverse array of experts, activists, and scholars gathered to discuss the significance of the SDGs and their practical applications. Throughout the day, 17 presentations unfolded, each dedicated to one of the 17 SDGs. These presentations illuminated how various organisations are actively striving toward these goals and how they can be integrated into various aspects of life.

One of our MSc in Sustainable Development students, Tanu Kugathasan, had the privilege of attending the event and shared his views:

"I had an incredible experience attending Scotland's International Development Alliance annual conference in Edinburgh, where I had the privilege of listening to diverse panellists discuss various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their real-world applications."

and the key takeaways he gathered:

"Recognizing that sustainable development is not limited to the global south; it's crucial for governments worldwide, just as the Scottish government has demonstrated by localising the SDGs.

Growth encompasses more than just GDP, necessitating consideration of various factors, including economic and environmental statistics and population well-being.

Inclusive policymaking is vital, with a focus on engaging local communities, particularly marginalised ones, to ensure their voices shape decision-making.

We all have a role to play, whether it's raising awareness of the SDGs or advocating for greater attention from our local governments."

Scotland's International Development Alliance annual conference emphasised the significance of the SDGs as actionable guidelines for governments and individuals, rather than abstract concepts. As we move forward, let's remember that sustainable development knows no borders, that genuine growth takes multiple factors into account, that inclusivity in policymaking is non-negotiable, and that every individual has a pivotal role to play in making these global goals a reality. By working together, we can collectively build a better future for all.
