Prospective postgraduate research students can apply for financial support towards their University or private accommodation costs. A number of awards are available of £1,750 per annum for the course duration. Selection is based on financial need.

Further details of the accommodation provided by the University can be found on the accommodation website.

The award will be paid towards University accommodation fees in the first instance; students transferring to privately owned accommodation (including privately owned properties let through the University) will receive the award as monthly maintenance payments.

This award is paid annually for the full tuition fee paying duration of your course.

Please apply for the award after you have submitted your application for a place at St Andrews. You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the award.

  • You must have applied for a postgraduate research programme: MPhil, PhD, MSc(Res), MSt(Res), EngD, MFA.
  • Eligible applicants must have a gross annual household income of under £40,000 or a below average household income in their country of residence, and articulate a need for support through a personal financial statement (further details below).

As part of the application you will be asked to upload evidence of your household income to support the "total household income" figure you have provided in your scholarship application. This should be evidence of income for the current or most recent full year such as: employment, wage, salary statements (most recent three months), tax certificates or returns, confirmation letters from department of work and pensions, letters from local government, FAFSA, Council Tax statement, Tax credits, PIP, DLA, dividends, pension, annuity. Where evidence is not available please provide bank statements or e-statements (most recent three months) to show receipt of income. Documents must be PDF or similar small file size format and in English.

Information for non-UK applicants

Household income will be assessed on below average country-specific income rates. When entering your income details in the scholarship application form, please convert your local currency to Pounds Sterling (GBP) and indicate the exchange rate you have used in the relevant question in the scholarship application form.

It is extremely important that you provide complete and accurate information when applying for funding. Your course and funding application are not linked, and applying for funding in no way impedes your course application.

How to apply

This scholarship is available through the Accommodation Award - Postgraduate Research Degree application in the Scholarships and Funding catalogue, in the Scholarships and Funding section of My Application.

  • After you have applied for your chosen Postgraduate Research course (e.g. PhD, MPhil, MSt (Res), MSc (Res), MFA) beginning in the 2024-25 academic year, you must allow at least three working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.
  • If you are a current student at St Andrews, you can access Scholarships and Funding through MySaint. However, you should wait until after you have applied for your intended postgraduate programme before doing so, to ensure that the scholarship application is linked to that course.

The student must be living in the UK and studying at the University of St Andrews to receive payment of this award, the award does not include periods of study not at the University of St Andrews.

If applying to this scholarship, please be aware of the following:

  • This scholarship is not transferable. If you defer the start date of your course you will need to apply again to the next academic year.
  • This scholarship does not include study abroad, study not at the University of St Andrews, Leave of absence, write-up, continuation or extension periods.
  • Online courses are not eligible.
