Waste management and recycling

Recycling Success - Congratulations!

In 2007/08, the University increased its recycling rate to 59%! Thank you all for your contribution to this success.

Waste minimisation

Whilst recycling is a far better environmental option than sending waste to landfill, this process still involves transportation and energy consumption. If you would like to reduce your carbon footprint still further, please try to reduce the amount of waste that you produce in the first place. In 2007/08, there was a slight decrease in the amount of waste that the University sent to landfill, but an increase in the total waste produced. Please help the University to reduce this quantity.

Composting

In July 2007, the University purchased its own in-vessel composter, which is being used to compost fruit and vegetable waste from all of the catered halls of residence, along with green waste from University grounds. This compost is being used on the University's own grounds.

Recycling

Recycling helps to reduce the environmental impacts associated with disposal to landfill as well as cutting down on waste management costs. Since April 2004 a recycling programme has been phased in across the University and now covers all Schools, Units and Halls of Residence. Please make full use of the recycling opportunities available at the University.

All feedback is encouraged. Contact the Environment Team (environment@st-andrews.ac.uk) with any comments or queries on the recycling scheme.
