Why study at St Andrews?

As Scotland's First University, one of the most successful research institutions in the world, and one of the oldest and most attractive Universities, St Andrews offers a postgraduate experience of remarkable richness. We support a vibrant and diverse community of post-graduate students through St Leonard's College, which offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and support across a range of issues for post graduate students.

The School of Management at the University of St Andrews is one of the UK's leading business and management schools, with a consistently high ranking in the Guardian's subject listings. (See News for updates.) We are proud of our distinctive identity as a smaller school focused on research and teaching of the highest quality. The School is research intensive with a strong grounding in the social sciences, where engagement with society is emphasised, underpinned by an ethos of responsible enterprise. At postgraduate level, students can benefit from internationally-recognised research expertise across a range of themes, while still enjoying the benefits of a small and friendly institution.

See Research Degrees.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a Masters level qualification in a subject relevant to their proposed topic, and an undergraduate qualification at or equivalent to an upper second or better. Doctoral Research Programme applicants without a Masters might consider our ESRC recognised MRes as a stepping stone towards doctoral study; for this we will welcome applications from high-calibre undergraduate students. The School will also welcome applications from candidates with substantial and relevant career experience.

For International Students, the language requirement would normally be an IELTS score of 7 or more. Doctoral students will be expected to present fluently in English, and to have a solid command of written academic English.

Term details

A PhD takes three years full-time or six years part-time by research. A continuation period of 12 months for both full-time and part-time students is normally allowed, but the thesis for a full-time PhD MUST be submitted within 4 years (or 7 years part-time) of the date of initial registration.
In most cases we will recommend a September starting date.
Key dates can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/semesterdates/

Student testimonial

Daniel - Alumnus

Daniel - England
"Before achieving a PhD in Management, I studied for an MLitt in Marketing, at the School of Management, University of St Andrews. During my time in St Andrews, I have had the opportunity to contribute to some of the teaching across many of the programmes. From academic and support staff, to fellow students and colleagues, and local friends; all in their own way, have contributed to making the School of Management at the University of St Andrews, and St Andrews itself, an intellectually rich atmosphere and brilliant place to be. Throughout my time in St Andrews, I have also played quite a bit of golf, had my stint at playing in the second row for a local rugby team, and done a lot of running in the Highlands with the local hill runners. Some of the best life-long friendships have been sparked up in St Andrews and when I leave, I know that an important part of me will remain here."
