Dynamics of World Cinema

Transnational Channels of Global Film Distribution

The Festival Circuit

Most of the films made outside Hollywood depend on the international circuit of film festivals for circulation beyond their own national contexts. In the past two decades, festivals have proliferated all over the world and currently number nearly 2,000 events.

Today, the film festival circuit is a key network in the distribution of non-Hollywood cinema. Working without formalised coordination or a centrally managed system, festivals often closely collaborate with other channels of international film distribution, including diasporic networks, and are increasingly deploying an array of on-line initiatives.

Dynamics of World Cinema will follow a selection of several films as they travel the international festival circuit, research that will allow a thorough assessment of the elusive financial workings of this system of distribution. The investigation will reveal the mechanics and economics of the global festival network, asking whether a film can receive adequate global distribution through a succession of festival showings.
