I specialise in East Asian cinemas, in particular Hong Kong cinema and other Chinese-language cinemas. I was awarded a PhD in Film Studies by the University of St Andrews for my thesis entitled 'Hong Kong Cinema 1982-2002: The Quest for Identity during Transition'.
My work on The Leverhulme Trust project 'Dynamics of World Cinema: Transnational Channels of Global Film Distribution' goes in line with my other research interests, including Asian film industries, diasporic film circulation, regional and national film policy, and non-mainstream cinematic practices. Recently, I have expanded my scope to study online fandom and issues of film promotion.
I am the editor of Cinemas, Identities and Beyond (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009), co-editor of Film Festival Yearbook 2: Film Festivals and Imagined Communities (with Dina Iordanova; St Andrews Film Studies, 2010), and Film Festival Yearbook 3: Film Festivals and East Asia (with Dina Iordanova; St Andrews Film Studies, 2011, forthcoming). My latest work, 'Red Cliff: The Chinese-language Epic and Diasporic Chinese Spectators', is featured in Robert Burgoyne's The Epic Film in World Culture (Routledge, 2010).
