St Modans, 5th July 2014
University of St Andrews Staff 176/7 (45 overs) beat St Modans 122ao (40.4 overs) by 54 runs
(H. Wilson 46, D. Coates 27, D. Bransden 23) (H. Wilson 4-37, S. Frankland 2-13, P. Jess 2-18)
St Andrews completed a league double over St Modans to rise to the heady heights of
6th in Division One.
Batting first, St Andrews put on their first 50 opening partnership of the year, with
Dom C showing aggressive intent whilst Alyn reined his in, although both punished
anything short. The stand eventually ended on 51 from 14 overs, Dom C bowled for 27.
Alyn fell soon after for a gritty 19 before Stan and Ben stabilised the innings against
some tight bowling until both fell for 8 to leave StAUSCC at 92-4 in the 32nd over. Dom B
and Henry, on his return to the team, put together a busy partnership of 35, taking full
advantage of the change bowlers to up the run rate and shift the impetus of the innings.
After Dom B fell for 23, Henry began to open up with a number of lofted boundaries, mainly
down the ground, supported well by Graham. Henry eventually fell for 46 towards the end
of the innings going for a second run, before James was also run out in the last over
push for runs, leaving Graham on 10* and the score 176-6.
With Stan opening the bowling with Alyn, St Andrews kept a tight lid on the scoring just
8 runs in the first 6 overs. Henry then came on to take a wicket in his first over before
some quick scoring from Sultan saw St Modans bring their 50 up in the 13th over Pat was
unfortunate not to hold on to a stinging catch as the game looked to be going St Modans way.
However, a spell of 5 wickets in 6 overs turned the game on its head Henry taking two
wickets bowled, including Sultan, and benefiting from a sharp catch at square leg by Ben,
whilst Pat took two wickets at the other end in a spell of 2 for 18 in 8 overs, to leave
St Modans at 73 for 6.
With some heavy rain forcing the teams to find shelter some rapid calculations showed St
Andrews well ahead however the rain soon cleared and play got back under way, although
not for the Fulham Football team who abandoned their training session nearby.
Some sensible batting saw St Modans up to 104 before Alyn was brought back for a one over
spell to try and make another breakthrough, and did so immediately, an edge behind caught
by Dom B as St Andrews closed in on victory. Some tight bowling from Stan was rewarded with
two late wickets before Ben finished off the innings for 122.
A pleasing victory based on a very solid batting performance.
