Rossie Priory XI, 5th May 2013
University of St Andrews Staff 56/1 (14.1 overs) beat Rossie Priory XI 56/ao
(30 overs) by 9 wickets
(S. Frankland 27*) (P. Pass 3-9, A. Stewart 3-12, S. Frankland 2-5)
St Andrews started off the league season with a convincing victory away to Rossie
Priory. With a team including three league debutants, St Andrews won the toss and
elected to bowl first on a slow early-season pitch.
Angus and Dave opened up with customary parsimony, Angus taking the first wicket
of the season clean bowled. There then followed a stubborn stand before some fine
work on the boundary from Ben, and an excellent take from Ed behind the stumps,
had the no.3 batsman run-out. Dave was unfortunate to finish his spell without a
wicket as Rossie set to stabilise, but Angus picked up his second courtesy of a
catch from Aakash to leave Rossie struggling at 27 for 3.
The change bowlers provided no respite, with Ben and Phil continuing the good work.
Bens first delivery clipped the top of the off bail but unfortunately failed to
dislodge it much to the astonishment of all. He eventually got reward as Sam took
an excellent catch to remove the remaining opener, diving at the last minute to
take skier, although an otherwise tidy spell was blotted by a 6 into the adjoining
cow-field. From the other end Phil bowled his full 8 over spell for just 9 runs,
taking three wickets in the process with a fine display of controlled pace bowling.
After taking his first two wickets clean bowled, Phil completed his haul with a
well-taken return catch low down.
Angus was bought back for a one over spell to try and remove the dangerous looking
Khan, which worked perfectly as he trapped him lbw. Stans off-spin then had its
usual befuddling effect on the tail, Sam taking his second catch at mid-off, before
the last man was clean bowled leaving St Andrews to chase down 57 for victory.
In response Dominic and Aakash set off solidly in pursuit of the total, asides from
Aakash escaping when the ball rolled onto the stumps but didnt dislodge the bails.
After a stand of 19, Dom got a leading edge to an away-swinger to be caught in the
gully for 10. This brought Stan to the crease which only served to hasten the
victory. With some crunching shots all-round the wicket Stan looked in fine touch,
taking advantage of some loose change bowling. Aakash provided solidity at the
other end, and even unveiled a Dilscoop, as St Andrews surged to victory in just
the 15th over Aakash finishing with 13 not out and Stan unbeaten on 27.
A clinical performance to start the season in fine style, based on an excellent
performance from the bowling unit and a solid fielding display.
