Largo XI, 14th August 2013
Largo XI 132/8 (20 overs) beat University of St Andrews Staff XI 62/ao
(13.1 overs) by 80 runs
(N. Rintoul 43; P.Pass 3-28) (A. Davies 26; W. Anderson 3-8)
On a dry, if overcast, evening the St Andrews Staff team made the short trip to play
familiar opposition at Largo. Sustained by out-of-date Viennese Whirls and with the
toss lost, St Andrews fielded first.
Some good bowling from Alyn was unlucky to go unrewarded, while from the other end,
Angus broke the opening partnership by bowling A. Ali. Unfortunately this brought
N. Rintoul into bat, who freely (if not chancelessly) scored 43, well supported
first by A. Warrender (19) and then B. Coates (26). Rintoul eventually fell to a
catch in the covers by Phil off Patrick, followed next ball by B. Fleming who
chipped a dolly slightly squarer to Lewis. Wickets continued to fall, including
three to Phil (3-28), but useful runs were added to the total, with Largo finishing
on 132-8.
The St Andrews inning got off to an ominous start with Dom C joining the primary
club thanks to a sharp slip catch. In the twilight, the rest of the batting order
had a poorly-scripted horror of their own. Alyn put on a useful 26 before holing
out, but proved to be the only batsman to reach double figures. Willie Andersons
slow lobs were particularly effective, against both aggression (Dom B) and defence
(Stefan), taking 3 for 8. A dogged final wicket stand between Angus and Patrick
entertained their increasingly rambunctious team-mates, but was ended when Angus
(opting against the switch-hit) chipped a catch to square leg. The St Andrews
innings finished 62 all out.
Hopefully the new comic sans scorebook will see some less comical batting performances
in its subsequent pages. However, a fun evenings cricket was played in the usual good spirits.
