Largo XI, 12th June 2013
Largo XI 161/5 (20 overs) beat University of St Andrews Staff XI 111/6
(20 overs) by 50 runs
(A. Warrender 83; A. Davies 3-33) (A. Davies 26, S. Frankland 48*; H. Gillin 2-2)
The second of our epic series against Largo was a rather more chastening affair,
going down by 50 runs on a pleasant Fife evening. A fine start by Alyn produced
two early wickets - which unfortunately gave the hard hitting Hughes Gillin, Andy
Warrender and perma-crock Drew McFarlane plenty of opportunity to hit boundaries
all around the park. The fusillade of shots was periodically interrupted by a
decent fielding effort - Stefan taking an excellent catch in the deep and then
effecting a fine run out. Sam was the pick of the bowlers, maintaining a good
full length which was hard to score off.
The St Andrews reply started brightly with a first ball four slapped by Alyn and
a fine partnership with Tom of 37 from 5.3 overs providing some thoughts of a
marvellous evening run chase. However, pressure from disciplined Largo bowling
provoked a run out and the tight line and full length never allowed Ahmed or
James to get out of first gear. Stan and Sam put on a lively partnership of 26 for
the 5th wicket but the target was much too distant and only another virtuoso
innings of 48 n.o. from Stan allowed us to move on to Nelson as the innings closed.
