Dr Robert Macculloch (fl.1652-1726) had many interests in Denmark, being both a medical doctor and a merchant-entrepreneur. He was authorised to set up tobacco manufactures at Copenhagen and Elsinore on 18 June 1670. By 20 May 1673 he received 200 rixdollars towards "kaibroe" [?]. Later he was also authorized on 14 December 1680 by the Danish government to translate into Danish all bills of the English and Scottish nations delivered at the customs office of Copenhagen. Macculloch was both a merchant and a burgess and owned a house in Ostergade (Kobmager kvarter no.34), assessed at 385 rixdollars in 1689 (750 in 1668). He became a member of the fire insurance company for this house on 27 March 1681 and had its water conduit repaired in 1697. Macculloch had a claim of 4 rixdollars to the late Samuel Gordon's, estate for medical aid. He was allowed to import goods tax free in September 1690 for his own use. He practiced among the French Reformed community in Copenhagen where he became an Elder in 1694. In 1712, Macculloch was ordered to pay war taxes as he did not reside in the Queen's palace despite being the court doctor, while in 1719 he was released from paying any further taxes. He died in Copenhagen on 10 October 1726. He married Charlotte Amalie de Hemert sometime before 1701 (d. 5 September 1711). She possibly died of plague, as Macculloch worked as a doctor dealing with plague in 1711. Given his status, Macculloch was perhaps the unnamed Scotsmen 'dend Schotlender' who undertook a journey to Holstein with Christian V in 1697 and paid 100 rixdaler for doing so on 12 July 1697. This is yet to be verified.
