William Alexander Buchan was born in Stockholm, the son of the Scottish iron exporter Alexander Buchan [SSNE 815] and Catarina Gregers. He was baptised in the German Church in July 1643. He studied at Uppsala in 1655, became a burgess of Stockholm in 1663, and thereafter traded with France. This may be the same William (Wilhelm) Buchan noted as a merchant in Stockholm who was married to Anna Hermans, daughter of the late Hans Hermans, a saddle-maker, in the Jacob church records. If so, his daughter was buried in Jacob church on 27 of June 1666. A William Buchan and Ludovig King were counter signatories on a letter by General James King [SSNE 2814] dated sometime after June 1655.Swedish Riksarkiv, Biographica Microcard, E01540 3/11 and 2/11; Stockholms Nations Studenter i Uppsala 1649-1800, p.30; T.
