George Hamilton was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade and the British army. He was originally an ensign in Colonel Wauchope's [SSNE 8259] regiment in the Brigade but succeeded Thomas Hamilton as captain on 13 December 1685. He, along with his Colonel, was among the 60 officers who resigned their commissions when James VII tried to recall the Brigade in 1688. He was commissioned in Wauchope's regiment of foot and eventually was made a colonel of another regiment of foot on 29 August 1693. He went with his regiment to Flanders in 1694 and rose to the rank of brigadier-general in Dutch service and then major-general in the British army on 1 January 1707. He became a lieutenant-general in Dutch service in 1714. In 1715, on the breakout of the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland, Hamilton joined the Earl of Mar and served as chief military adviser on the side of the rebels. He was eventually executed for his part in the rebellion.
