John Wauchope was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade and the army of James VII and II. He was the eldest son of Captain Francis Wauchope of Niddrie and Elizabeth Alexander of Menstrie and was commissioned as a captain in the Scots-Dutch Brigade on 2 June 1674. He rose to the ranks of sergeant-major on 17 November 1677, lieutenant-colonel on 15 April 1680, and finally to colonel on 9 April 1685. In 1688, the Brigade was recalled by James VII and II, and Wauchope was one of the 60 officers from the Brigade who resigned his commission and returned to Britain. He was given command of a Scottish regiment raised in Musselburgh that year. He continued to serve in James' army during the Glorious Revolution and later fought under Patrick Sarsfield in Ireland during the Williamite War of 1689 to 1691, where he served at the sieges of Derry, Cavan, Athlone (where he was captured but later exchanged), and Limerick. After the defeat of the Jacobite forces in Ireland and the Treaty of Limerick, Wauchope served in France and Spain. He appears to have fought in the Irish Brigade in French service and was killed at Marsaglia in 1693.
