John Henderson was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade between 1629-1662. He succeeded command of Captain James Lindsay's company on 22 September 1629 in Sir David Balfour's [SSNE 8033] regiment. He was present at the disaster at Kallo (Calloo) in 1638 and 18 men from his company were taken prisoner. Regardless, he was promoted to sergeant-major of the regiment on 7 March 1639. He quickly rose lieutenant-colonel, assuming the rank on 22 November 1639 after the death of Colonel Sir Archibald Douglas [SSNE 8034] and promotion of Lieutenant-Colonel John Kirkpatrick. On 26 November 1650, Henderson married Pieternella Vosbergen, the widow of one Heer Berchem. In 1660 Henderson was transferred out of Kirkpatrick's regiment and promoted to colonel of the now reinstated third regiment, which had been dissolved since 1655. Henderson was dead by 7 March 1662 and command of the regiment fell to his lieutenant-colonel, Louis Erskine [SSNE 4964].

There is a slight discrepancy in regard to John Henderson. According to David Dobson's 'Scottish Soldiers in Continental Europe' [part one] (St Andrews, 1997), a John Henderson was colonel of a regiment in the Scots-Dutch Brigade in 1693. This has no grounding in Ferguson, other than a note saying "The testament of John Henrysone, knight, sometime colonel of one of the regiments in Holland, is entered in the Edinburgh Commissariot Records of the date, 16th Oct. 1693," (p. 493). Indeed, in Ferguson's list of the succession of colonels, the colonels of the three regiments in 1693 were Æneas MacKay [SSNE 5049], George Lauder [SSNE 4982], and Sir Charles Graham.

N.B. In 1643 Henderson's company was numbered at 120 men with an overall salary of £1655.
