MONRO, JOHN [SSNE 7822]
John Monro, younger of Obsdale, was the son of colonel John Munro of Obsdale [SSNE 178]. John is on record as a captain. As he was to embark with the rest of the troops of Donald Mackay [SSNE 93] in Cromarty on 22 September 1626, John Monro wadset (or mortgaged) some of his lands to Colin Mackenzie of Inchemult for £3,000. After the death of his father in March 1633, John left Germany and returned to Scotland ‘to settle his effaires’. Nevertheless, he died at sea on the way back to Germany probably in 1634, as he intended to land in Hamburg with fellow Monro soldiers.
