BRADE, WILLIAM [SSNE 7806]
Text source
William Brade (1560-1630) was a violin and viola player in the early-modern period. Like many musicians, he was itinerant, working in both Germany and Denmark: around 1590 he was employed at the Brandenburg court, and in 1594 he also began to work at the Copenhagen court of King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. He actually travelled regularly between the two until 1606. Between 1608-10 and 1613-15 Brade worked as a city musician in Hamburg and he also had three of his dances published there. Duke Frederik III of Schleswig-Holstein appointed Brade as Hofkapellmeister from 1622-5, but after that he returned to Hamburg.Julie Ann Sadie, Companion to Baroque Music, Schirmer Books, New York, 1991, pp.159-160.
