Lawrence Middleton came from Shetland. He was listed as ensign in the Danish army in 1657, a lieutenant in 1658 and captain in Jylland in 1659. Middleton was attached to Gyldenloves Horse during the siege of Copenhagen. He returned to Shetland during the Restoration and served as a baillie of Lerwick from the 1660s onwards. For a report on his gravestone we know that he died in 1709 at the age of 74 (buried in Lerwick on 8 August that year).
