John Hay acted as a cooper burgess of Bergen in Norway, although he does not appear in the printed burgess book. The information on him comes through a source relating to his daughter, Alison Hay. In it the Hays were noted as heir to Matthew Donaldson, son of Matthew Donaldson a fuller burgess of Dundee, presumably Alison's husband (1625). It is not clear if Alison herself lived in Scotland or Norway
