David Stuart was the son of Professor Adam Stuart [SSNE 4913]. David was enrolled at Leiden university ca. 1646. The university records note an attempt by a Mr David Stuart to hold a private college in metaphysics at his home in February 1649 - this accurred at the same time his father was censured for apparently teaching the learning of DesCartes'. On 14 June 1661 David, as a doctor of philosophy, was allowed to give public lectures. Either on 18 October or 6 November 1664 David was appointed Professor of Philosophy with a salary of 800 fl., which was raised to 1000 fl in February 1667. A David Stuart [SSNE 7220]was noted as defending his thesis in divinity at Leiden University in July 1662. Cf. also [SSNE 4914]. These may be the same man.
