Sir Henry Graham was a half brother of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose. He took part in the ill fated attempt on Scotland by Montroses forces in 1649-1650, but escaped to Norway. He had previously served as Stuart envoy to Brandenburg Prussia in 1649
