Michael Gabrielson Spalding was the son of Gothenburg president of Commerce, Gabriel Spalding[SSNE 4816]. He had first gone to sea aboard a British man-of-war after being pressed into the Royal Navy while in Britain. He was released in 1705 after intervention by the Swedish resident in London, Christoffer Leijoncrona. He later served in the Swedish navy and had become a corporal by December 1708. Spalding was commissioned in Sweden in 1709 and eventually became a captain commander in 1718. He died on 12 November 1741 with the rank of Commodore. Spalding married Sara von Löwen. He had a number of interesting siblings including Herman [SSNE 3545], Johan [SSNE 6874] and Beata Johanna [SSNE 6418]. His two brothers died at the battle of Freidrichshall in June 1716.
