Hans Jacob Belfrage was born in June 1686. He volunteered for the admiralty in 1699, before transferring to the Vestgötha Infantry regiment in 1705. Belfrage became an NCO there by 1707 and eventually a lieutenant in 1711. He left service in 1718 and lived until 1750 when he died in Forshaga. He married Esther Catharina Funck.
