Henry/Henrich Sommerscales was the son of Richard Sommerscales and Ellena Foster, who married on 3 September 1569. Richard died in 1612. [Richard was the son of Adam Sommerscales, who died in 1570, and his wife Anne. Adam was possibly a son of Robert Sommerscales, born 1488, who may have been married to Isabel, buried 26 March 1566]. Henry was born in 1584 in Settle in Yorkshire, and was christened on 28 September 1584. He emigrated c.1615 from England to Trondheim, where he was also known as "Henrik Engelskmann" and Sommerschell. He was a merchant in both London and Trondheim. He later became rådmann, or councillor, in Trondheim between 1634-1643. On the 1 January 1643 he became "overformynder" in the same city and "president" (borgermester) in Trondheim in 1644. He was re-appointed "overformynder" in Trondheim on 12 January 1648. Henry married Anna Rorig [Rorichsdatter?]. She may have been of English descent herself. She died before 1660 by drowning in Nidelven, Trondheim. They had the following children: Stinchen Henriksdotter (who died in 1671);Eline Henriksdotter (who died in 1663);Elisabeth Henriksdotter (who died on 28 Aug 1682) she married the Englishman Thomas Hammond in 1659; Henrich Henrichsen (who was born after 1632 and died after 1674; and Hilchen Henriksdotter (who was born on 5 May 1627 and died in 1687). Henry senior died in 1664 in Trondheim, before 29 March 1664.
