General Walter Colyear was the second son of Colonel Alexander Colyear [SSNE 5040] and Jean Murray. He was born in 1657 and served in the prince of Orange's Guards at Maastricht in 1676. After the battle of St. Denis in 1678 he became a captain in the guard and later took over as Colonel of his own regiment by 1697. Colyears' promotions were steady thereafter, becoming brigadier in 1702, major-general in 1704, lieutenant-general in 1709 and general in 1727. Colyear also undertook other roles including the governorship of Bonn in 1707, and of Namur between 1718-1747.
