Francis Rait was the son of William Rait of Conosyth in Angus. He served as Standard Bearer to Captain James Ruthven of the Scots Brigade in the Netherlands in the 1680's. The usual rank attached to such a post was ensign. See NAS RD2/51/702; D. Dobson 'Scottish Soldiers in Continental Europe' [part one] (St Andrews, 1997).
