John Forbes of Tulloch [sometimes known as Forbes den Äldre] served in Colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] Regiment in Denmark. He was deprived of his company by King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway (although this was against Mackay's will) but was later restored to his position. He was garrisoned at Stade through April-July 1627, and was later wounded in action at Oldenburg sept 1627. Forbes was billeted at Malmo in the winter of 1628-9. According to Lind he left service on 12/07/1629. Forbes received a Danish safe conduct pass on 5/8/1629. He transferred to Sweden with the regiment. On 28 February 1632 Forbes appeared as captain of cavalry with his company in Schmalkalden (Thuringia) and wanted to be quartered in the town. This quartering lasted until 31 March 1633, when Forbes left the town by order of Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar after the complaints of the council. However, his steward stayed in the town until 30 June 1634 extorting money for recruiting. Forbes himself was later killed in action at Nordlingen in September 1634 holding the rank of lieutenant colonel and serving in the Scots Brigade.
