William Fermor was possibly the son of George Fermor [SSNE 3874]. He was a Scots gentleman in the Russian army from 1708, serving as lieutenant colonel. He commanded a small garrison of Veprik in the Ukraine taken by the Swedes with great loss in 1709. He was later major general and had two sons, William [SSNE 3876] and John [SSNE 3877].
