David Spalding served in the Swedish army after some service in Brabant, presumably in the service of the Dutch Republic. He was recorded as an NCO in 1699 who left that year. In 1702, a David Spalding, almost certainly the same man, again appeared in Swedish service - this time as an ensign. He left in 1703. This may or may not be the same David Spalding noted as a godparent at Johann Voigt's son's baptism in Gothenburg in August 1690. He may also be the same as the David Spalding noted in the Gothenburg shipping registers, who freighted goods to Wismar in 1688, and again to Wismar and Hamburg in 1689, and to Lubeck twice in 1690.
