James William Stuart served as a lieutenant colonel in Dutch service, who, in 1676, was offered a regiment of infantry in Danish service as he could bring with him experienced non-commissioned officers. He served as chief of this regiment in 1676 and became commandant at Landskrona that year. In 1677 he was chief of two squadrons of Sjaelland infantry. In 1678 he was ordered to depart for Denmark by ship. He was defeated by Admiral-General Wachtmeister, and again repelled a second time, finally landing with 800-900 men, only to have to retreat in the face of the a Swedes. Stuart was court-martialled and found at fault over unsuccessful attempt to establish a bridgehead in Blekinge, 1678. Nonetheless he received a 10 rixdaler payment from the king that year for additional services.E.
