William Monro was the son of Andrew Monro of Kincraig (Easter Ross). William served as an ensign in Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment in Swedish service in 1630. He transferred to John Skytte's [SSNE 6280] recruited infantry regiment in 1635 before going on to act as lieutenant captain in Robert Monro's [SSNE 94] - formerly Mackay's- infantry regiment in 1638. William was promoted to captain in 1639 with which rank he served in Alexander Cunningham's [SSNE 2115] regiment in 1639-40. He married a woman by the name of Bruce and bought an estate in Germany where he subsequently lived. His successors also lived in Germany.
